Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 2025
1. Introduction
Free Transfer is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use our peer-to-peer file transfer service.
2. Information We Do NOT Collect
Free Transfer is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do NOT:
- Store or have access to the files you transfer
- Collect personal identification information
- Track file content, names, or sizes
- Retain file metadata after transfers complete
- Require user registration or accounts
- Use cookies for tracking purposes
3. How the Service Works
Free Transfer uses WebRTC technology to establish direct peer-to-peer connections between users' browsers. Files are transferred directly from sender to receiver without passing through our servers. The connection is encrypted end-to-end by WebRTC.
4. Technical Data
To facilitate peer-to-peer connections, our signaling server temporarily handles:
- WebRTC connection metadata (ICE candidates, SDP offers/answers)
- Randomly generated transfer IDs
- Connection status information
This technical data is only kept in memory during active transfers and is immediately discarded when the connection ends.
5. Server Logs
Our web servers may temporarily log standard HTTP request information such as IP addresses, browser types, and access times for security and service maintenance purposes. These logs are not linked to individual users and are automatically deleted within 7 days.
6. Third-Party Services
Our website may contain links to external donation platforms (such as Buy Me a Coffee). When you click these links, you leave our service and are subject to the privacy policies of those third-party services.
7. Data Security
All file transfers use WebRTC's built-in encryption (DTLS-SRTP). The peer-to-peer nature of our service means that files never touch our servers, providing an additional layer of security and privacy.
8. Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- Ensuring you only share files with intended recipients
- Verifying the identity of people you share files with
- Not sharing sensitive information with untrusted parties
- Understanding that once a file is sent, you cannot control what the recipient does with it
9. Children's Privacy
Free Transfer does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The service is intended for general audiences and does not require age verification.
10. International Users
Free Transfer is accessible globally. Since we don't store user data or files, there are no cross-border data transfers to worry about.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
12. Open Source
Free Transfer is open source under the MIT License. You can review our code to verify our privacy practices at any time.
